General network Info/Intro

Roughly 50,000 more helium hotspots (also known as a LoRaWAN Gateway) come online every month adding coverage to the world’s first decentralized wireless blockchain technology. We know this network as Helium “the people’s network”, which grants incentive for consumers deploying on the network in a form of cryptocurrency called $HNT.

50K Hotspots a month? How does this effect my earnings and the rest of the network.

With scaling as large as this on a monthly basis, naturally the populated areas get filled first and continue to become over saturated. Being a network that needs to grow outwards, and not inwards (crazy concept I know..), optimized rewards are only granted to the ones who are truly providing new necessary coverage. Filling the gaps between the dead zones and further increases Helium’s ubiquity. Here are some examples of California, USA becoming extremely over saturated.

How do I know if I am not earning “optimal rewards”?

Once you notice that certain areas are very over saturated and need to be tended to, you start to grasp the concept of what we call “Transmit Scale” this scale is determined on the hexagon saturation density. Simply put, if a certain resolution of hexagons is over filled. Your hotspots transmit scale will decrease to a lower number (than 1.00). Now Transmit Scale does not directly effect your rewards specifically for your beacons and witnesses. However another hotspot with a lowered transmit scale will give you decreased earnings for witnessing their beacons. More on Transmit Scale rules and different hex resolutions density max/density target found here.

Learn more about your “Suboptimal Transmit Scale” by click the Improve -> on your hotspot’s explorer page.

I think I get it now, how can I learn more with this new network tool called Hotspotty?

Hotspotty is a great tool for both beginners and adept users. By combining a strong visualization method, and the ability to emulate transmit scaling corrections, you get a very intuitive usage of how to correct transmit scaling and potentially help everyone earn more rewards (it’s a team effort, let’s work together).

More Information coming soon, I am looking to help teach everyone how to use this tool freely on their own time. In the meantime head over to one of my favorite helium network user’s youtube channel Eigen Tech. He has a great video already released on the basics of Hotspotty.
